Over the Years of working as a full-time yoga teacher, teaching thousands of group and private yoga classes, offering women’s circles, selfcare retreats and yoga teacher trainings I experienced over and over that it can be quite a challenge to establish yourself as a professional in an industry that is often undervalued and where many teach as a hobby. There are so many teachers out there offering classes at non-sustainable rates, that a lot of teachers seem lost at how to establish themself as a business. How to find adequate pricing, how to find students, how to stand out with your offerings and how to actually make a living from your profession as a yoga teacher. A little spoiler beforehand: It’s not just about making a living through full-time yoga teaching; the goal is to live comfortably from it as well. Teaching yoga is a wonderful profession that enables many to reconnect with themselves, and this positive impact should be reflected in your financial well-being. In a world where its socially accepted to get wealthy from all sorts of industries—some potentially harmful (tobacco, alcohol industry, processed food industry), others neutral (real estate, all sorts of business owners) or even beneficial (doctors, therapists) —there’s this odd notion that yoga teachers should be underpaid because “they love what they do” and “are on a spiritual journey”. As spiritual beings, our birthright is abundance, not poverty. To be a great yoga teacher, it’s essential that your basic needs, including financial stability, are met. Worrying about bills should not overshadow your ability to be of service. Even if you’re not solely responsible for your financial support due to having a supportive partner or parents, it’s still important to charge fair prices to maintain a balanced energy exchange.
